I stopped in Hunters Lodge in 1972 while on a trip to DC. Also in the same neighborhood was Potomac Arms. They were located in Alexandria, VA right on the Potomac River. Ye Olde Hunter and Hunters Lodge were retail operations for Interarmco, later called Interarms, which was a large broker, wholesaler, and retailer established by Sam Cummings. In fact, some establishments that had been located in the eastern US relocated to so. CA in the 1950's and 1970's and even later for some of them. In reading up on the history of some of these products, there is a clear pattern that there was a center of this activity in so. I've read that Fed Ord intentionally stamped their import mark very lightly so that if necessary, it could be buffed off and refinished over for purposes of "boinkery." Sometime along in there came the requirement to place import marks on firearms brought into the US.
People who are looking at buying an M1A or other M14 clone often pass on the Chinese versions, and it seems like the Fed Ord version is in the same league. I've read that the Fed Ord M14 knock-offs use a Fed Ord investment cast receiver and the other parts were purchased from the Chinese (I don't know if it was Polytech or Norinco). Knowing a bit about this company might help decided if you are thinking about buying a Fed Ord product. Also, many of Fed Ord's assembled products (M1 Carbines and Rifles, M14's) have their own fabricated receivers and are marked with the Fed Ord name.
For example, people are still falling for the fake Nazi-marked rifles who don't know about their origin. Indirect damage is still being done, however, and that's why I posted this information. Since Fed Ord is long time out of biz, they aren't directly hurting anyone now. Then having the actions, they rebuilt them back into military configuration with spare parts that they had on hand. Apparently, what Fed Ord had done was to cheaply acquire a number of "pawnshop specials" in the form of Bubba-ized Springfields for the purpose of obtaining the actions. A close look at the rear receiver bridge revealed two drilled holes that had once accommodated a sporting receiver sight. It was made of Parkerized parts with a WW2-date bbl. Many years ago, I bought a Springfield Model 1903A3 from a co-worker for not too much money. One visitor to the Fed Ord operation spoke to a man from South America who had made a number of fake Nazi proof and acceptance mark stamps which were applied to certain otherwise routine milsurp arms. The M14 and M1 Rifle receivers that they made have been called from "good to garbage."
These they made from Model 712 Schnellfeuer full-automatics that they couldn't legally sell as-is, so they made semi-auto frames and installed the 712 remainder on the new frames. One of their notorious fakes was the 711 model with the detachable 20 round magazine. When the Chinese gov't sold off Mauser Military Pistols ("Broomhandles") in the 1980's, they refurbed many of these.
