I thought I read some place that the first numbers (09505) designatedthe model number. I am trying to decode the serial number on my JD 950 so I can figure out what year it was built. Usually the only repair history you will see is whether PIP's were done, and any warranty claims. We usually do it anyway, but some dealers probably don't. In this particular case, it looks like the second dealer may have paid out the floorplan before they sold it, so the delivery receipt didn't get done when it finally got sold. Sometimes the service office will do it if the tractor is in for a major repair or something. Farmer to farmer, or through competitive dealers or auctions, won't get registered with Deere usually. It's easier now with direct computer links, but many dealers probably still only do the delivery receipts when it involves using Deere for floor-plan financing. On older tractors like that, telling Deere about ownership transfers was a real pain. In other words, sometimes they are guesses. Too often the delivery receipts are done by the dealer's accounting department based on information they have available at the time of transaction. That is pretty helpful, but I am more interested in knowing the history of the tractor, to try and verify the hours are right and any major repairs and things like that. But an indivdual has it right now, not the dealer in Freeport. I will try and do some checking but it may be a while. Currently shows dealer in Freeport, IL to be current owner since October of 2008. A search of the last 6 digits will bring up a 4850 sold by dealer in Danville, IL in 1984 to a gentleman in Fairmount, IL.
